In Olympic Dam cooper mine in South Australia, copper-bearing rock (ore) from a open pit mine is blasted, loaded and transported to the primary copper crushers. Then the ore is crushed and screened, with the fine sulfide ore (~-0.5 mm) going to froth flotation cells for recovery of copper.

Screens size and distribute the classified ore to a series of conveyors, like those above, for transportation to the mill for further processing.

In the copper ore mining process, the ore is crushed then it must be roasted to convert sulfides to oxides, which are smelted to produce matte.

Some loads of copper ore go directly to leach stockpiles, others are directed to primary crushers where the ore is crushed into small enough sizes to be placed on a conveyor belt. At this point the copper ore can be sent directly to leach stockpiles or it can be directed to concentrator facilities for further crushing and grinding.

The ore is crushed, ground and then enriched (concentrated) by Froth Flotation.

The ore is crushed in a series of cone crushers. A cone crusher consists of an interior grinding cone that rotates on an eccentric vertical axis inside a fixed outer cone. As the ore is fed into the top of the crusher, it is squeezed between the two cones and broken into smaller pieces.

The crushed ore is then ground even smaller by a series of mills. First, it is mixed with water and placed in a rod mill, which consists of a large cylindrical container filled with numerous short lengths of steel rod. As the cylinder rotates on its horizontal axis, the steel rods tumble and break up the ore into pieces about 0.13 in (3 mm) in diameter. The mixture of ore and water is further broken up in two ball mills, which are like a rod mill except steel balls are used instead of rods. The slurry of finely ground ore that emerges from the final ball mill contains particles about 0.01 in (0.25 mm) in diameter.

Copper ore processing

Sulphide ore is processed on-site by conventional flotation to produce copper concentrates for shipment to off-site smelters. Concentrates are smelted and refined into metal at smelters.

Trucks from the mine tip directly into a 400t capacity ROM dump hopper. A primary gyratory crusher crushes the ROM ore from a nominal top size of 1,500mm to less than 200mm. Oversize material is deposited on the ROM pad to be further broken by a mobile rock breaker.
Copper Ore is reclaimed via apron feeders onto a conveyor belt providing direct feed at a SAG mill. The SAG mill trommel undersize discharges into a hopper and is pumped to conventional hydrocyclones, operating in closed circuit with a ball mill. The hydrocyclone overflow (P80 of 280µm) reports to flotation, while the underflow returns to the ball mill.
The flotation plant consists of two parallel trains of rougher/scavenger cells. The rougher/scavenger concentrate reports to the regrind circuit to further liberate the copper minerals. After regrinding, the concentrate is cleaned in a conventional cleaner/recleaner circuit to reach final concentrate grade.
The concentrate is dewatered in a circuit consisting of high-rate thickening followed by pressure filtration to produce a filter cake suitable for transportation. Flotation tailings is thickened and pumped to the tailings dam. Most of the plant water is recovered and recycled from the thickener overflows and tailings dam return water. Fresh make-up water is supplied from a river-water dam as required.
